About the Australian Shepherd
Despite its name, the Australian Shepherd was developed in America as a sheepdog for ranch work, with roots tracing back to Spanish Sheepdogs brought over by Basque shepherds in the 19th century. While originally blue dogs were most common, they now come in various Merle patterns and tricolours. Their innate working instinct means they still excel in their original role, and their athletic grace makes them popular in many canine activities.
