About the Basset Hound
While originating from France, the Basset Hound was developed in Britain, with French hounds imported in the 1860s forming the foundation for the modern breed. It was initially used for pursuing small quarry. Possessing an excellent nose, its long ears help retain scent, and pliant skin provided defence when moving through dense undergrowth. These characteristics should remain moderate, ensuring the breed retains the athleticism and soundness necessary for its original role. Now popular as a companion and show dog, its distinctive looks and gentle nature make it a beloved presence.
