About the Bloodhound
The Bloodhound, possibly descended from hounds kept at St Hubert in Belgium, has been a fixture in Britain since before 1300, even helping to revive the French Chien de St Hubert in the 19th century. Originally employed as a leashed hound for hunting deer and wild boar, this breed also has a long history of tracking humans. Known in Scotland as the 'sleuth-hound', it was famously used on the Scottish border until around 1600 to pursue raiders and cattle thieves. A truly historic and purposeful breed, its tracking prowess is legendary.
