About the Bulldog
The Bulldog's ancestors, smaller, stocky canines featuring powerful heads and strong jaws, emerged as bull-baiting grew popular in Britain by the 16th century. After bull-baiting was outlawed in 1835, the breed's future was uncertain until companion dogs formed the basis for its regeneration as dog showing became fashionable. Recognised by The Kennel Club in 1873, the Bulldog remains an iconic British breed, symbolising the spirit of the country and cherished as a loyal family companion.
