Hailing from Germany, where it's known as the Teckel or 'badger dog', the Dachshund was originally bred for tracking wounded deer and for pursuing badgers or rabbits underground. This miniature wire-haired variety is part of a group where, in Britain, miniatures ideally weigh under 5 kilograms. Its distinctive wiry coat is one of three types found within the breed. These spirited and tenacious little dogs, with their charming appearance, make wonderful and engaging pets.
