Originating in Germany, where it's known as the Teckel or 'badger dog', the Dachshund was developed for tracking injured deer and for pursuing badgers or rabbits underground. This smooth-haired variety is one of three coat types within the breed. In Britain, two sizes are recognised, with miniature examples ideally weighing under 5 kilograms. These versatile dogs, with their distinctive shape and keen senses, make wonderful companions for those who appreciate their spirited nature and sleek appearance.
