About the Harrier
The Harrier, a scent hound whose history stretches back to at least the thirteenth century, was originally bred to hunt hare, a function reflected in its name. Standing between the Foxhound and Beagle in size, its conformation is similar to other members of its family, and it was initially followed on foot. After some nineteenth-century interbreeding for speed, it could also be followed on horseback. Though packs are now rare, these intelligent and affectionate dogs make wonderful, active companions for those who can meet their considerable exercise needs.
