About the Hovawart
The Hovawart's name, derived from the German words 'hof' (farm or homestead) and 'wart' (to guard), clearly explains its ancient purpose, with mentions in German chronicles dating back to the Middle Ages. This breed, nearly extinct by the early 20th century, was brought back by enthusiast Kurt König, who used dogs found in isolated areas as his foundation stock. The German Kennel Club formally recognised the Hovawart in 1936, ensuring the continuation of this dedicated guardian.
