About the Leonberger
The Leonberger was created in 1840 by Mayor Heinrich Essig in Leonberg, Germany, with the aim of producing a dog with a leonine appearance to match the town's crest. This magnificent breed was developed from St Bernards crossed with Newfoundlands, possibly with some Pyrenean Mountain Dog influence, and selectively bred for its red and fawn coat. Originally employed as a guard dog, the Leonberger has since garnered a devoted following due to its wonderfully gentle and affectionate temperament.
