About the Neapolitan Mastiff
The Neapolitan Mastiff's ancestors trace back to ancient civilisations, serving as formidable fighting dogs and companions in war, said to have led Roman legions. Their imposing appearance, often with cropped ears and spiked collars, was designed to strike fear into enemies. The modern breed owes much to Italian painter Piero Scanziani, who meticulously developed and stabilised them. Reaching the show ring in Naples in 1946, these impressive dogs have gained wider recognition. Today, breeders strive to maintain their distinctive type, offering a loyal and protective presence.
