About the Portuguese Water Dog
The Portuguese Water Dog likely originated from Mediterranean water dogs, possibly introduced to the Algarve by North African traders. This versatile dog was used for driving fish into nets, retrieving lost equipment, and even acting as a messenger between boats. Its resonant bark reputedly served as a foghorn, preventing collisions at sea. Although modern fishing technology once threatened its existence, this national breed of Portugal has been successfully regenerated and thrives today as a wonderful family companion.
