About the Retriever (Labrador)

Hailing from Newfoundland, where its ancestors assisted fishermen with nets and lines, the Labrador's foundations lie in the St John's dog, crossed with hunting breeds brought by English traders. These capable dogs were then transported to England, where their retrieving abilities were quickly recognised by the sporting gentry, with the Earl of Malmesbury giving the breed its enduring name. Today, the Labrador's remarkable versatility makes it the most popular pedigree breed, excelling as a family companion, service dog, guide dog, and working gundog.
