About the Rhodesian Ridgeback
Developed initially in South Africa as a scent hound for tracking various game, the Rhodesian Ridgeback gained its fame in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) for tracking lions, holding them at bay until hunters arrived. This athletic and courageous breed is named for the distinctive ridge of hair which grows in the opposite direction along its spine, a feature linked to ancient Khoikhoi dogs. With its striking appearance and brave history, the Ridgeback is a truly unique and impressive hound.
