About the Russian Black Terrier
This relatively new breed was created by the Russian army after the Second World War, specifically as a guard and general service dog, even tasked with rounding up fugitives. With the Russian dog population depleted, a versatile breed was needed to cope with varied terrains and extreme climates. Formed from a mixture of breeds, a Giant Schnauzer was central to the programme, bred with Airedale and Rottweiler bitches, and further crossed with Moscow Retrievers. These capable dogs were first showcased in 1955, and their standard was published shortly after, eventually adopted internationally. They are truly robust and adaptable companions, bred to excel in challenging conditions.
