About the Samoyed

Hailing from the chilly expanses of North-Eastern Siberia, this delightful canine was bred to assist nomadic Samoyede and Nentsy communities. Their original duties were diverse, encompassing reindeer herding and protection, pulling sleds, and even hunting. Historically, some dogs were sacrificed for their fur. Early examples displayed mixed colours, sometimes appearing with darker markings on a light coat or lighter markings on a darker one, and such individuals even joined the initial Polar Expedition. Today, however, only pure white, occasionally with cream or biscuit tints, is accepted. Their dense double coat offered superb insulation, while flat, heavily furred paws, often compared to snowshoes, prevented ice accumulation. An early UK foundation sire, Antarctic Buck, was rescued from Sydney Zoo after surviving a Borchgrevink expedition.
