About the Schipperke

This Belgian breed was originally developed to control vermin on barges and proved to be an adept watchdog, earning its name 'Schipperke', meaning 'little skipper' or 'little boatman'. In the 17th Century, these dogs even competed in Flemish beauty contests, sporting ornamental collars of brass. A working man's dog by tradition, its popularity soared in 1885 after Queen Marie Henriette acquired one, quickly becoming Belgium's most popular breed. These alert and charming little dogs have a rich history and continue to be cherished companions.
