About the Schnauzer

The Schnauzer, the original variety of the breed, has been known in Germany since at least the 14th Century, even appearing in a Rembrandt painting. Its name, translating to 'whiskered snout', perfectly describes its harsh coat, bristly whiskers, and beard. Initially called the Wirehaired Pinscher, it adopted the Schnauzer title after a dog of that name won a breed class in 1879. Bred primarily as a vermin killer, it also demonstrated its versatility by herding livestock and pulling small carts. These intelligent and adaptable dogs are truly multi-talented companions.
