About the Shar Pei
This distinctive canine, thought to share ancient lineage with the Chow Chow and the venerable Han Dog, originated in China approximately two millennia ago as a guardian. Initially, this breed was refined for combat and hunting purposes. Its famously loose, wrinkled hide provided an advantage in fights, making it difficult for an opponent to secure a firm hold, whilst its bristly fur proved unpleasant to bite. The name itself aptly describes this texture. Following near eradication during the 20th-century communist crackdown on domestic pets, the breed has thankfully seen a resurgence. Contemporary breeders have successfully mitigated issues such as excessive skin folds and ocular health concerns.
