About the Spaniel (American Cocker)
This delightful canine’s heritage can be traced to shared ancestral lines with the English Cocker Spaniel, specifically through the celebrated black dog Obo, whose offspring, Obo II, appeared in Canada during the late 1800s and bred extensively. Initially developed in the United States from English examples, a clear distinction emerged by the 1920s as some American fanciers favoured dogs with more rounded skulls, shorter snouts, and denser fur. By 1936, the American Kennel Club offered distinct categories for the English type, and in 1945, they formally recognised the two as separate breeds: the American Cocker Spaniel and its English cousin.
