About the Spaniel (English Springer)
The English Springer is the tallest of the land spaniels, sharing a common ancestry with its relatives. Once classified, selective breeding for size and colour helped to establish its distinct type. These dogs earned their name by 'springing' forward to flush game into nets, and later, after firearms became common, they were used to flush game from dense undergrowth. Liver and white is the most common colour, though black and white and tri-colours also occur. This breed remains the most popular spaniel for working in the field.
