About the Spaniel (Field)

In the late 19th century, 'field spaniel' encompassed all land spaniels, which were then differentiated by their physical attributes; the smaller ones were cockers, while the larger dogs were springers, or 'Fields' if solid coloured. This breed has a fascinating history, incorporating Sussex Spaniel blood and later outcrosses with Springer Spaniels and even Basset Hounds. After a period of decline and fluctuating breed type, a dedicated society was formed in 1923, with breeders working hard for its survival. Today, while solid liver and black remain popular, roan colours are also permitted, and the breed continues to be cherished by enthusiasts.
