About the Spaniel (Irish Water)
Although the Irish breed's official club formed in 1890, water dogs with liver coats, a profusion of curls, distinctive top knots, and slender tails were known for centuries in Ireland. A key figure, Boatswain, born in 1834, has bloodlines found globally. Despite being classified as a spaniel, this dog functions as a retriever, particularly adept at retrieving from water, and competes in UK retriever trials. With theories suggesting ancestry from breeds like the French Barbet and the now-extinct English Water Spaniel, this intelligent dog is a superb water worker.
