About the Spaniel (Sussex)
The Sussex Spaniel, with its distinctive golden-liver coat, holds the title of the scarcest land spaniel and boasts a rich heritage. This breed was specifically developed by Mr. Fuller, who resided near Hastings, for working in the dense local cover. Consequently, the Sussex is low to the ground and powerfully built, possessing thick protective skin to navigate the densest undergrowth. Uniquely among spaniels, it 'gives tongue' while working, helping its handler keep track of its location when out of sight. Despite facing several periods where its existence was threatened, the breed has made excellent progress in recent years.
