About the St. Bernard
The St. Bernard, Switzerland's national dog, is named after the monk who founded a hospice in the 10th century to aid travellers in the perilous Swiss Alps. Initially, these Alpine Mastiffs guarded property, but their rescue abilities were soon discovered, leading to their role in locating lost travellers by the 18th century. New bloodlines, possibly including Newfoundland and Bloodhound, were introduced to develop larger dogs, resulting in both long and smooth-coated varieties. Despite the romantic image of a brandy cask, created by Victorian artist Edwin Landseer, this majestic dog remains a symbol of alpine rescue and companionship.
