About the West Highland White Terrier
The West Highland White Terrier, affectionately known as a 'Westie', was developed in Argyllshire, Scotland, from Cairn Terrier ancestry in the mid-19th century. The Malcolm family of Poltalloch selectively bred white strains, finding them easier to spot when working on the moors. This breed was refined to be a little shorter in body and possess a more elevated tail set compared to the Cairn. This delightful dog received Kennel Club recognition in 1907, and remains widely cherished for its lively personality.
